Anatomical Scenario Movement Theater is proud
to present Anna and The Annadroids: The Robots Dream
Tour as part of
the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival - FringeNYC.
Anna
and The Annadroids: The Robots Dream Tour is a multimedia whirlwind of
sharp, fierce dancing, ever-changing color schemes, sassy costume design,
diverse musical soundscapes, and provocative video projections. Choreographer
Anna Sullivan is known for her over-the-top, plastic-jointed, pre-programmed
movement vocabulary, which accentuates the anthropological concepts she
uses to create 21st century cultural dance.
Anna is a highly interactive ''living'' mannequin created in the exaggerated image of the idealized female form. The Annadroids are built upon the original Anna android matrix. Their programmed behavior is consistent with and a critique of the over indugences and superficialities prevalent in contemporary consumer society. Each piece or ''Droidset'' scenario serves to illustrate a different phase of psychological and behavioral development as the Annadroids dramatically progress from creation to consciousness. ''Droidsets'' parody Barbie Dream House ''Playsets'' and are designed to help reveal the turmoil the Annadroids experience as they begin to recognize and struggle with their preprogrammed artificiality. The social commentary built into Anna and The Annadroids is not so much biting as it is blinking. The Annadroids will stand there and indifferently blink at you with their absurdly long false eyelashes until you get the message that blank, mindless acceptance of frivolous consumerism and robotic conformity is not even acceptable for androids let alone human beings.
Anna and The Annadroids features: musicians Happy Chichester and Erin Karla; performers Tom Griffith, Shelby Lafrinere, Kristin Lewis, Jessica McKelvey, Rian Orders, Cate Owens, Anya Porter, and Anna Sullivan; and technical designers J. Lillian Gray and James Pryor.
Anatomical Scenario is an unconventional dance company
that utilizes quirky gestures and symbolic movement vocabulary to invite
an interactive re-evaluation of cultural norms and personal belief systems.
More specifically, by means of metaphorically hyper-exaggerating such public
and private concerns as vulnerability, susceptibility, desire, mortality,
relationships, motives, ethics, and the terror of the unknown, Anatomical
Scenario interrogates the conventions of a social order that celebrates
conformity and idealizes a plastic-souled way of life. Emotional behavior
and civil conventions are playfully personified and then super-magnified
to reveal the excessive dementia suffered by millions of people who unconsciously
accept--and even assert to be the most ''normal'' way of life--cultural
scenarios that are clearly personally and socially psychopathic in nature.
